Sluice Boxes State Park, located just 34 miles southeast of Great Falls, Montana, is a stunning natural wonder and a favorite destination for hiking enthusiasts. My friend Kacey and I have enjoyed two memorable trips to this park, each offering unique experiences. The first adventure took place in July 2022 when we hiked the entire 6.5-mile trail from north to south. We began at the Evans-Riceville Trailhead, about 13 miles south of Belt. Two years later, in July 2024, we revisited the park, this time bringing our wives along for a shorter out-and-back hike starting from the same trailhead.
The Challenge of Wet Feet
Our initial hike in 2022 was ambitious—walking the entire 6.5-mile trail with 32 stream crossings. Equipped in old running shoes, we were prepared for wet feet. The water crossings, some reaching knee-deep, were a fun challenge under the hot summer sun. The trail’s historical remnants, such as old railway bridges and clever tunnels, combined with the stunning natural beauty of Belt Creek’s limestone canyon, made this hike unforgettable. The park’s mix of rugged terrain and human engineering created a unique hiking experience that we both enjoyed.
A Tiring Trek
By the time we reached the southernmost end of the park in 2022, we were exhausted. The 16 stream crossings had taken more time than expected, and it was late in the afternoon—around 3:30 PM. Meeting a kind fisherman and his wife, who offered us a lift back to the trailhead where we started, allowed us to spend a relaxing evening at the Harvest Moon Taproom in Belt. It was the perfect ending to an adventurous day.
Double Date in Nature
The park’s allure convinced us to bring our wives along for a second visit in July 2024. This time, we started our hike from the northern trailhead, trekked about three miles in, and then made our way back. The girls were a bit surprised by the water crossings, but the hand-holding added a fun and romantic touch to the experience. We revisited a spot from our previous trip, which turned out to be the highlight of the day—a stunning natural pool beneath a cliff where we swam, snacked, and even jumped off a rock. The manufactured wall visible only from below made for a picturesque backdrop. The leisurely 6-mile hike with eight stream crossings took us around 4.5 hours, ending with a delightful meal at the Black Eagle Brewery in Great Falls.
CAUTION
While most of the trail is safe, there are a few scrambles and areas where a slip could result in serious injury or worse. Stream crossings can be challenging, especially for younger or less nimble hikers. The area is also home to wildlife such as black bears, rattlesnakes, and mountain lions, though we didn’t encounter any during our visits. We would not recommend this hike for young children or those not comfortable with challenging terrain.
