The announcement follows Southwest CEO Bob Jordan’s statement earlier this year about phasing out the airline’s open seating policy. Details have now emerged about how these changes will benefit frequent flyers, thanks to a recent update on Southwest’s official website.
Starting in 2025, Southwest will offer assigned seating, with a focus on rewarding loyal travelers through its A-List and A-List Preferred programs. Passengers at the A-List tier—achieved with 20 one-way flights or 35,000 qualifying points—can select standard legroom seats during booking and extra legroom seats within 48 hours of departure at no additional cost.
A-List Preferred passengers, who reach this status with 40 one-way flights or 70,000 qualifying points, will enjoy even greater flexibility. These travelers can choose any seat, including extra legroom options, at the time of booking. Additionally, companions on the same reservation will receive the same seating benefits, making it easier for families and friends to travel together in comfort.
Extra legroom seating is poised to become a cornerstone of Southwest’s premium offering. Approximately one-third of the airline’s seats will feature a generous pitch of 34 to 36 inches, providing at least three extra inches of legroom compared to standard seats. This change caters to passenger demand for more spacious seating options and aligns Southwest with its competitors, who have long profited from premium seat offerings.
While specific benefits for Rapid Rewards credit cardholders remain under wraps, Southwest has hinted that co-branded credit card members may also gain access to assigned seating perks. An official announcement on these benefits is expected in early 2025, further enhancing the value of being a loyal Southwest customer.
Southwest’s commitment to enhancing the passenger experience extends beyond seating changes. The airline is actively upgrading its fleet with modern amenities, including USB A and USB C power ports. These features will be installed on all Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft and retrofitted into existing MAX 8 and 737-800 planes over the next few years, ensuring passengers stay connected during their flights.
Despite these premium upgrades, Southwest reassures travelers that its hallmark offerings remain intact. The airline’s lowest fare option will continue to include two free checked bags, no change or cancellation fees, and travel credits that never expire.
